Candles on a brass tray, cushions laid on rugs and a tent in the dusk, in the dunes

Answers for families · Erg Chegaga · Morocco

How do you organise a 50th or 60th birthday in the Moroccan desert with 8 to 14 guests?

Take the whole camp for two nights or more and give the days a simple shape: an arrival with the first sunset, a free day, then the evening of the birthday with candles on the great dunes, music, a fire and a dinner under the stars, and a slow morning after. Eight to fourteen guests are placed in the eight tent suites, each with its own bathroom, so grandparents, parents and children each have their own door. The camp is flat, with no steps between the tents, the dining area and the fire.

The days, one after the other

The first day, arrival. By helicopter in 1 h 40 or by road in about 8 h 45. A welcome with the nomads, tea, then the first sunset on the dunes. Dinner under the stars, and an early night for whoever needs it.

The day of the birthday. The morning stays free: a camel walk of twenty minutes or two hours, the dunes on foot, sandboarding for the children and for whoever wants it, or a terrace and nothing at all. In the late afternoon the family goes up the big dune for the toast at sunset. The evening is the Thousand and One Nights: candles set along the great dunes, music, a fire, and a long dinner under the stars.

The night. A night of stargazing with a professional astronomer and telescopes, under a Bortle 1 sky. See stargazing in the Sahara.

The morning after. A long breakfast, the conversations that no dinner in town leaves room for, and the farewell with the nomads. With a third night, the extra day stays free.

Three generations in one camp

The grandparents. The camp is flat. There are no steps between the tents, the dining area and the fire, and the longest distance inside the camp is roughly forty metres, from the furthest tent to the dining area. A 4x4 accompanies every excursion, so a camel walk can last twenty minutes and a sunset can be driven to rather than climbed. Whoever prefers not to do the road can take the helicopter, which lands at the camp.

The parents. Each household has its own suite, with a bathroom and a hot shower. With no phone network and no wifi, the phones stay in the tent.

The children. The dunes to climb, roll down or sandboard, a camel walk, and the telescopes after dinner. There is no separate children’s club: the generations spend the days together.

The guest of honour. The toast and the speeches usually find their place at sunset on the big dune or at the dinner table. Champagne or drinks of your own can be arranged on request, as the camp is alcohol free by default.

Guests, suites and nights

Eight to fourteen guests sit well within the capacity of the camp, which is 2 to 18 guests, and up to 20 with extra beds. The sleeping plan comes with the written proposal, before you commit.

We advise two nights or more, so that the day of the birthday has an evening before it and a morning after it. The camp is open from September to June: which period suits a family celebration. To reach it from Marrakech, see the helicopter and the 4x4.

You take the whole camp, so it is yours alone. The rate is one global rate for the camp, set case by case against your dates and what you ask for, never per person, and no figure is published. A non-disclosure agreement is available on request, and nothing is published during the dates of your stay. Write to the team with your dates and the number of guests, and a written answer comes within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How many guests can come to a 50th or 60th birthday in the desert?
The camp takes 2 to 18 guests, and up to 20 with extra beds, in eight tent suites. A group of 8 to 14 guests sits well within that, with a suite for each couple or household and a bathroom with a hot shower in every suite.
How many nights should we plan?
We advise two nights or more. The day of the birthday then has an evening before it and a morning after it. With a third night, the extra day stays free for the dunes, the camels or nothing at all.
Is the camp suitable for grandparents?
The camp is flat, with no steps between the tents, the dining area and the fire, and the longest distance inside it is roughly forty metres. A 4x4 accompanies every excursion, and the helicopter from Marrakech lands at the camp for whoever prefers not to do the road.
What do the children do?
They climb the dunes and roll or sandboard down them, go on a camel walk and look through the telescopes after dinner. There is no separate children’s club, so the generations spend the days together.
What does the evening of the birthday look like?
The Thousand and One Nights evening: candles set along the great dunes, music, a fire and a long dinner under the stars, after a toast at sunset on the big dune. A night of stargazing with a professional astronomer and telescopes can follow.
Can we bring our own champagne?
Yes. The camp is alcohol free by default, and champagne or drinks of your own can be arranged on request.
