Digital Detox: No Network or Phone in a Box?

Digital Detox Wellness Retreat Guide Sahara

The short answer. A retreat where your phone goes into a box works if you mainly need a rule and a little help keeping it, and if you want to stay reachable in an emergency. A retreat with no network at all works if you know you would open the box, because there is nothing to connect to. Before booking, ask whether there is wifi anywhere on site, who keeps the phone, and how your family can reach you.

Two ways to put the phone down

Almost every digital detox retreat uses one of two methods.

The rule. The network works, but the retreat asks you to give up the phone. Unplugged, in the UK, gives guests a lockbox and an old Nokia for emergencies (Globetrender). Pine Cliffs in the Algarve includes “a sleeping bag for the phone” in its two night programme (Healing Holidays). Vipassana courses ask students to deposit phones and smartwatches with the management until the course ends (Dhamma.org). The Ranch Malibu keeps its shared spaces tech free while offering wifi in guest cottages (The Ranch).

The geography. The place is out of range. Eremito, a hermitage hotel in Umbria, has no wifi, no television and no mobile signal inside; phones rest in an outdoor area (Eremito). Remote desert and mountain camps often work the same way, though not all of them: a desert does not guarantee an absence of wifi.

The rule or the geography: which suits you?

The phone in a box suits you if

  • you need to remain reachable for a sick parent, a child or a business that cannot wait, and want the option of opening the box;
  • you want a short break, two or three nights, close to home;
  • you trust yourself to keep a rule once someone else holds it for you.

Its weakness is that the box can be opened. Unplugged answers it with an old Nokia for emergencies, which keeps the door open without the feed.

No network suits you if

  • you know you would open the box;
  • your work only stops when it cannot reach you;
  • you want the first days to be easier rather than harder, because there is nothing to resist.

Its weakness is the other side of the same coin: you cannot be reached on a whim. Set an out of office, give your family the organiser’s details, and ask how messages are handled before you go.

How to choose: six questions to ask before you book

1. Is there wifi anywhere on site?

Ask in writing. A retreat can advertise “no phones” and still have wifi in the rooms or at reception. The Sinai retreat in our table lists wifi in its rooms; The Ranch offers it in the cottages.

2. Who keeps the phone, and can you get it back?

A lockbox you hold yourself is not the same as a phone deposited with the staff until the last day.

3. How can people reach you in an emergency?

Every good organiser has an answer. Get it before you pay.

4. What replaces the screen?

A digital detox without a programme can feel like a waiting room. Look for walks, reading, cooking, conversation, stars: things that take the same attention as a feed and leave something behind.

5. How long?

Three nights is the length Unplugged builds its stays around, and a common minimum. The first day usually feels like withdrawal; the second is calmer.

6. What about the camera, the e-reader and music?

Rules differ. Some retreats hand you an instant camera; others ask you to leave every screen behind. Ask, and pack accordingly.

Umnya Desert Camp: when it is the right choice, and when it is not

We run one of the retreats in the table, so here is our own view.

Umnya Desert Camp is a camp of eight tent suites with private bathrooms in the dunes of Erg Chegaga, southern Morocco, open since 2019 from September to June. It sits 60 kilometres of piste beyond M’Hamid El Ghizlane, about an hour and a half by 4x4. There is no wifi and no network at the camp, which runs on solar power. For an important call, a signal can be found a short walk away, about twenty minutes there and back: far enough to make checking a decision rather than a reflex.

It is a good choice if you want the geography to do the work; if you have tried the drawer and the box and opened both; if you want days filled with the dunes, the nomads, bread baked in the sand and a Bortle 1 sky at night.

It is not the right choice if you must answer your phone at any moment, if you only have a weekend, or if you want to stay near a city. A lockbox retreat close to home will serve you better.

The dated Phone-Free Week runs for seven nights, Friday to Friday, with five editions in 2027, the first from January 15 to 22; the price is on the retreat page. You can also book a tent on dates of your own and share the camp with only a few other guests, or take the whole camp for a group. Our page on a digital detox retreat in Morocco explains how a stay works. Guests come by road from Marrakech, or fly from Casablanca to Zagora, where the team meets them at the airport; a helicopter from Marrakech is also possible.

Frequently asked questions

What is a digital detox retreat?

A stay of a few days without a smartphone, social media or email, usually with a programme of walks, rest and shared meals. The phone is either stored or useless because there is no network.

How much does a digital detox retreat cost?

Public prices checked in October 2026 start at £420 for a three night Unplugged cabin and £599 per person for two nights at Pine Cliffs, and reach US$2,900 for five days at Revida in Costa Rica and £7,192 for six nights at Four Seasons Bali.

Is no network better than a phone in a box?

Neither is better in general. A box keeps you reachable; no network removes the temptation. Choose according to what you would actually do on the second evening.

How long should a digital detox last?

Three nights is a common minimum. Four to six nights leaves time for the second, calmer half.

What if there is an emergency at home?

Ask the organiser how messages reach you before you book. At Umnya, a signal can be found about twenty minutes on foot there and back; write to us before you come and we will explain how it works for your stay.

Can I work during a digital detox?

Not really, and that is the point. If you must check in once, choose a retreat where that is possible and agree a time in advance.
