Holistic Wellness Retreat Sahara Morocco
What holistic means here, and what it does not
Holistic is a word that has been used to sell almost anything, so it is worth saying plainly what it means at Umnya. We are not a clinic. Nobody here will diagnose you, prescribe anything, or promise a cure. What we have is a place where the things that usually interfere with recovery are physically absent.
There is no mobile signal, because there is no tower within range. There is no traffic, no neighbour, no notification. The camp is yours alone, so there is no other party to be sociable with at breakfast. The only sounds are the wind and the people you came with.
That absence is the whole product. Everything else is built on top of it.
The days
Mornings begin before the heat, usually around six, with breathwork or gentle movement on the sand while the light is still low. The sand is cold at that hour and it holds the shape of your feet, which is a small thing that most people mention afterwards.
Through the middle of the day nothing is scheduled. This is deliberate. Most retreats fill the hours because empty time feels like poor value, and most guests spend the first two days waiting for the next item on the programme. By day three they stop waiting. That is when the retreat actually starts.
Evenings bring a fire, food cooked over it, and a sky rated Bortle Class 1, the darkest classification that exists. An astronomer joins on one of the nights.
What is genuinely on offer
Berber healing practices from the families who work here, which means henna, argan and rose oil massage, and hammam-style treatments adapted to a camp. These are real, local and unhurried. They are not a spa menu.
Sound work with traditional instruments, held in the open rather than in a room, which changes it completely.
Silence walks at first light with a nomad guide who does not talk, because he is navigating and because the silence is the point.
If you want acupuncture, a nutritionist or a physiotherapist, we will bring one from Marrakech at cost. Just tell us in advance, since nobody arrives here by accident.
What actually changes
The sleep. Almost everyone reports it first, and it is the least mystical thing on this page. The cold at night, the absence of light, and a body that has walked and eaten properly produce eight or nine hours of unbroken sleep in people who have not had that in years.
The second thing is slower and harder to name. Somewhere around the third day, people stop reaching for a phone that is not there.
Who this suits
People who already know what they need and have not been able to get it. Anyone who has tried the app, the weekend, the spa hotel, and found that ordinary life reasserted itself within seventy two hours.
It suits groups of four to twelve, and it works particularly well for two or three friends who have known each other a long time and do not need to fill silences.
How to come
Three to five nights, September to May. The camp is privatised for your group. Tell us your dates and how many of you there are, and we will send the full programme and the terms in writing before anything is paid.
