Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m). Spectacular mountain scenery. This is entirely on paved road.

Ouarzazate → Agdz → Zagora

~200 km · 2.5h

Follow the N9 south along the Drâa Valley. Kasbahs, palm groves and ancient fortified villages line the road. A highlight of the journey.

Zagora → M'Hamid El Ghizlane

The last paved section, passing through the village of Tagounite. M'Hamid is the end of the road, literally. Beyond here, only piste.

A helicopter from Marrakech arrives at camp in approximately 1h40, crossing the High Atlas and the vast plain of the Drâa. The descent onto the dunes of Erg Chegaga from altitude is an experience in itself, the scale of the landscape only becomes clear from the air.

Everything you need to know to reach M'Hamid independently

Vehicle requirements

  • A proper 4×4 is essential for the piste section
  • Standard SUVs or crossovers are not suitable for the piste
  • High clearance and low-range gearing required
  • Umnya provides 4×4 escort from M'Hamid, no need to drive piste yourself

Road conditions

  • Marrakech → M'Hamid: entirely paved (N9 and N12)
  • Road quality is good after Ouarzazate; some sections narrow
  • The piste to camp is compacted sand/gravel, no tarmac
  • Do not attempt the piste at night without a local guide

Fuel and provisions

  • Fill up in Zagora, last reliable fuel before M'Hamid
  • M'Hamid has a small fuel station (opening hours variable)
  • There are no services between M'Hamid and the camp
  • Camp provides full board, no provisions needed

Timing recommendations

  • Leave Marrakech no later than 07:00 for comfortable arrival
  • The pass at Tizi n'Tichka can be slow, allow extra time in summer

How do you get to Erg Chegaga?
From Marrakech, take a private transfer via Ouarzazate and Zagora to M'Hamid El Ghizlane (~8 hours), then a 4×4 across 50 km of desert piste to the camp (~1 hour). Alternatively, take a helicopter from Marrakech in approximately 1h40. There is no public transport to Erg Chegaga.
How long does it take to get from Marrakech to Erg Chegaga?
By road: 9–10 hours total (8h to M'Hamid + 1h piste). By helicopter: approximately 1h40. We recommend the overland route for the scenery and recommend leaving Marrakech early to arrive before sunset.
Can you go to Erg Chegaga without a 4×4?
The 50 km piste between M'Hamid and the dunes requires a 4×4. However, you don't need to own or hire one, Umnya Desert Camp meets all guests at M'Hamid and provides the 4×4 transfer to camp. Many guests drive themselves to M'Hamid in a standard car and switch to our vehicles there.
What is the nearest airport to Erg Chegaga?
Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ) is the closest, approximately 3.5 hours by road from M'Hamid. Marrakech-Menara Airport (RAK) is further (8–9h) but has far more international connections. We recommend flying into Marrakech and taking a private transfer, or flying private into Ouarzazate.

Yes. The entire route from Marrakech to M'Hamid is on paved national roads (N9 and N12). Road quality is generally good throughout. The mountain section over the Tizi n'Tichka pass is winding but well-maintained.
