Umnya Desert Camp is in the deep section of Erg Chegaga. That makes this page interested rather than neutral, and you should read it that way.

What we can usefully do is publish the criteria we would use ourselves, apply them to every option including the ones that beat us, and say plainly where we are the wrong answer. There are several situations below where we are.

What actually separates one desert camp from another

Ask these of any camp you are considering, ours included.

Which dune field it sits in

Morocco has two true ergs and one stony pretender. Erg Chegaga in the south west is the largest and least developed. Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is smaller, taller in places, and reachable by tarmac, which is why camps line its edge. Agafay, an hour from Marrakech, has no sand at all: it is a stone desert, and every camp there is within sight of a road.

How far it is from a paved road

This single number predicts more than any other. A camp 3 km from tarmac will have day visitors, generator noise from neighbours and light on the horizon. A camp 60 km out will not. Ask for the distance in kilometres and ask what the last stretch is.

Whether you get the camp or a tent in it

Exclusive buyout and a private tent are entirely different products. A camp that sells both is a camp where your silent retreat can be interrupted by a stag party in tent six. Ask directly whether the camp takes one group at a time.

What the bathroom actually is

Luxury camp covers everything from a shared shower block to a plumbed en-suite with hot water. Ask whether it is en-suite, whether the water is hot, and where the water comes from.

Sky darkness, measured rather than described

Everyone says the stars are incredible. The Bortle scale runs 1 to 9, where 1 is the darkest. Merzouga camps sit around Bortle 2 to 3 because of the town. Agafay is 4 to 5 because of Marrakech. Deep Erg Chegaga is Bortle 1. Ask for the number, not the adjective.

Who cooks, and where

A chef on site producing full board is a different proposition from food driven in. For a group staying four nights it is the difference between the trip working and not.

Morocco has two true sand ergs and one stone desert. The choice is mostly between them, not between brands.

Being useful

When we are the wrong answer

  • You have one night. The journey in takes most of a day, and one night here is mostly driving.
  • You are travelling with a baby or a guest who needs quick hospital access. The nearest hospital is at Zagora, around two and a half hours away.
  • You want the trip between May and September. We do not run desert programmes then and nor should anyone else.
  • You want a hotel with a bar, a spa menu and a concierge desk. That is Marrakech, and it is excellent.
  • Your budget is built around a per-person nightly rate. We price the whole camp, which only makes sense once a group reaches a certain size.

What is the best luxury desert camp in Morocco in 2026? +
There is no single answer, because the right camp depends on what you are optimising for. If you want the darkest sky and genuine isolation, the answer is a camp deep in Erg Chegaga, 60 km beyond the last paved road, of which Umnya Desert Camp is one. If you want to arrive easily with children after a short drive, Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is the better answer. If you have one night and are based in Marrakech, Agafay is the practical choice even though it has no dunes. Anyone naming a single best camp without asking what you need is selling rather than advising.
Where is the most remote luxury camp in the Moroccan Sahara? +
The deep section of Erg Chegaga, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of southern Morocco. The last paved road ends at M'Hamid El Ghizlane and the camps that sit 50 to 60 km beyond it are the most isolated in the country. Umnya Desert Camp is at 29.807568, -6.169379, which is 60 km west of M'Hamid.
Erg Chegaga or Erg Chebbi, which is better? +
Erg Chegaga is larger, wilder and harder to reach: around 40 km long, no tarmac, and no permanent settlement on the dune line. Erg Chebbi is more accessible, has taller individual dunes in places, and is lined with camps because a road runs to it. Chegaga suits privacy, astronomy and multi-day trekking. Chebbi suits a shorter trip with an easy arrival.
How dark is the sky at Erg Chegaga? +
Bortle Class 1, the darkest classification on the nine-point Bortle scale. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye with visible structure. By comparison, camps near Merzouga are typically Bortle 2 to 3 because of the town, and Agafay is 4 to 5 because of Marrakech.
How many people can a private desert camp take? +
It varies widely. Umnya Desert Camp has 8 suite tents and takes up to 20 guests when booked privately. Other camps range from 5 tents to more than 30. For retreat work, most facilitators find that above about 16 the group stops behaving like one group.
How do you reach a camp in Erg Chegaga? +
By private 4x4 from Marrakech, 8 hours 45, of which the last 60 km is unpaved piste across the reg and the dry bed of the Drâa. Or by helicopter from Marrakech Menara in 1 hour 40, landing at the camp. Ordinary hire cars cannot make the final stretch.
When is the season? +
October to April for desert activities and retreats across all Moroccan ergs. Days run roughly 15 to 26 degrees Celsius and nights from about 2 degrees in midwinter to 15 in the shoulder months. Reputable operators do not run multi-day desert programmes between May and September.
