The Wilder Choice

Why Erg Chegaga Is Different

Erg Chegaga is Morocco's largest dune field — over 40,000 hectares of continuous, sculpted sand stretching to the Algerian border. It is reached only after 50 kilometres of open piste by 4×4, a journey that keeps the casual visitor away and preserves the silence entirely.

Unlike Erg Chebbi, there is no village at the edge of the dunes. No quad bike operators lining the road. No overnight tour buses unloading at sunset. What you find instead is a horizon with nothing on it.

The dunes rise to 300 metres — double those of Erg Chebbi — and the landscape shifts colour through the day from pale gold at noon to deep amber and violet at dusk. The stargazing, with near-zero light pollution, is among the best in North Africa.

  • Morocco's largest erg · 40,000+ hectares
  • Dunes up to 300 m — the tallest in Morocco
  • Near-zero light pollution · exceptional stargazing
  • 4×4 access only — no mass tourism
  • Helicopter transfers from Marrakech (1h40)

The Accessible Choice

What Erg Chebbi Offers

Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga in south-east Morocco, is the country's most photographed dune field. Its rosy-orange sands — dramatic against a hard blue sky — rise to around 150 metres along a corridor about 22 km long and 5 km wide.

The paved road runs directly to the foot of the dunes, which makes it fast and easy to reach. It is ideal for travellers who have limited time or who are combining the dunes with a broader Morocco itinerary including Fes or the Todra Gorge.

The trade-off is crowds. Dozens of camps line the dune edge; quad bikes and camel convoys operate from dawn. The dunes are beautiful, but the experience is shared with hundreds of others at any one time.

  • Paved road access — easy to reach
  • Compact but dramatic — great photography
  • Close to Merzouga village and amenities
  • Many budget and mid-range camp options
  • Good base for Todra Gorge and Fes loop

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before choosing

What is the difference between Erg Chegaga and Erg Chebbi?
Erg Chegaga is Morocco's largest and most remote dune field, covering 40,000+ hectares near M'Hamid El Ghizlane. It requires a 50 km 4×4 piste to reach, which keeps it wild and uncrowded. Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is smaller but directly accessible by paved road and much more commercially developed.
Which is better for a luxury or private experience?
Erg Chegaga, without question. The remoteness and difficult access mean very few luxury camps operate here, and those that do — like Umnya Desert Camp — can offer true seclusion: no other camps visible, no noise, no crowds. Erg Chebbi has many camps but all operate in close proximity along the dune edge.
How far is Erg Chegaga from Marrakech?
Approximately 600 km by road — an 8–9 hour private transfer via Ouarzazate and Zagora. Umnya Desert Camp also offers helicopter transfers from Marrakech in about 1h40, or private jet coordination for guests flying from further afield.
Can I reach Erg Chegaga without a 4×4?
No. The final 50 km from M'Hamid to the camp is open desert piste that requires a proper 4×4 vehicle. There is no paved road. Umnya Desert Camp arranges all transfers in its own fleet of 4×4 vehicles, and also coordinates helicopter arrivals.
When is the best time to visit Erg Chegaga?
October through April is the ideal window. Temperatures are warm during the day (18–28°C) and cool at night, with no risk of extreme summer heat. March–April brings occasional wildflowers and softer light. July and August should be avoided — daytime temperatures exceed 45°C.
Is Erg Chegaga good for stargazing?
Exceptional. Erg Chegaga has near-zero light pollution — some of the darkest skies in North Africa. The Milky Way is clearly visible on clear nights, and Umnya Desert Camp provides telescopes for guests who want to explore the sky in depth.
