Desert Fat Bike Tour Morocco | Sahara Cycling Retreat | Umnya

The speed of discovery

Walking the Erg Chegaga takes five days to cross it. A 4x4 can cross it in two hours but misses everything. Fat bikes find the middle ground: fast enough to cover real distance, slow enough to feel the terrain, quiet enough to belong to it.

This is what makes the Desert Bike Tour different from every other desert experience.

The bikes

Fat bikes are built for exactly this terrain. The 4-inch tyres distribute weight across a large surface area, allowing them to float over soft sand that would swallow a standard bicycle tyre. On hard hamada and compacted oueds, the same tyres provide stability and traction that makes fast riding both possible and safe.

E-bike models (Bosch or Shimano pedal-assist) are available for guests who want to cover more distance, manage inclines comfortably, or simply ride with a group of varied fitness levels without anyone being left behind. The assist can be set to any level, including zero, so riders choose their own effort.

What you cover

Day format : every morning, after breakfast at camp, the group rides out with the guide. Routes are planned the evening before based on conditions, wind direction and group preference. Typically 4 to 6 hours of riding with a midday stop.

Dune corridors : the entry routes into the erg, where firm sand between high dunes makes for fast, flowing riding. The scale of the dunes on either side is different from any cycling you have done before.

Hamada plains : flat rocky desert that goes on beyond what you can see. At speed on a fat bike on good hamada, the horizon is your only reference point. This is the kind of freedom that road cycling approximates but never quite achieves.

Oued routes : dried riverbeds of compacted sand and gravel. Natural surfaces that are smooth, fast and often lined with vegetation: wild tamarisk, dead acacia, the occasional green patch around a subsurface water source.

Draa Valley palmeries : narrow pistes between date palms, passing small Berber settlements, crossing stone bridges over dry water channels. One of the most beautiful cycling environments in North Africa, ten kilometres from the camp.

Iriki salt lake : the ancient lake surface is hard, white and flat to the horizon. On a fat bike at full effort across the Iriki, with the mirage shimmering ahead and silence behind, you will understand why people who have done this come back.

The lunch stop

Every day, the support vehicle arrives at a designated point ahead of the group. The cook has set up a rug, positioned in a sheltered spot: a hollow between dune lines, the shade of a small acacia, the lee side of a hamada ridge.

Lunch is not sandwiches and energy bars. It is a prepared meal: salads, warm tagine, fresh bread, fruit, cold water from the cooler, tea. You eat with the desert around you and nothing on your phone because there is no signal to put on it.

Who this is for

The Desert Bike Tour is the most accessible of the Umnya adventure retreats. No licence is required. No prior technical cycling experience is needed: fat bike handling is intuitive, and the guide provides a brief session before the first day. With e-bikes available, the only real requirement is a willingness to be outside for 4 to 6 hours.

The retreat works for:

  • Active couples and families (minimum age 14, or 12 with e-bike)
  • Groups of varied fitness levels where one format fits everyone
  • Solo travellers who want a physical frame for their time in the desert
  • Road or mountain cyclists who want to ride terrain completely unlike what they have ridden before

Maximum 20 riders. Every departure is private.
