The family trip
they will never forget

Camel rides at dawn. Dune climbing. A Milky Way so bright it needs no explanation to a seven-year-old. The Sahara is the best classroom Morocco has.

Why the desert

Children understand the desert immediately

No museum, no guided tour, no "educational experience" designed by adults for children. The Sahara requires nothing but presence, and children are extraordinarily good at being present.

The dunes are the world's best playground. Rolling down a 300-metre face of soft sand at sunset, with no consequences and no end point, is the kind of experience that sits permanently in a child's memory.

The night sky makes astronomers of everyone. When a seven-year-old sees the Milky Way with no coaching, they don't need to be told it's extraordinary. They know.

And without phones and screens, there are none available at Erg Chegaga, families consistently say they have more actual conversations in two days than they've had in months.

What families do at Erg Chegaga

Activities that work for all ages, no age minimum, no experience needed

Camel trek at sunrise

Ages 4+

Each family member gets their own camel. A private guide leads you through the dunes as the sky shifts from indigo to orange. No experience needed, camels are calm and the pace is slow. Most children cite this as the single best thing they have ever done.

Dune climbing and sandboarding

Ages 5+

The Erg Chegaga dunes reach 300 metres. Climb to the crest, then roll, run or sandboard back down. Pure, consequence-free physical play in one of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth.

Telescope stargazing

All ages

After dinner, we set up telescopes in the open desert. Bortle Class 1 sky: the Milky Way visible in full colour, Saturn's rings clear through the eyepiece, shooting stars every few minutes. Children typically refuse to go to bed.

Camp cooking and Moroccan meals

All ages

Fresh bread baked in the camp oven, tagine slow-cooked over charcoal, honey and Amlou at breakfast. Moroccan food is universally popular with children, mild spices, familiar textures, generous portions.

Desert survival basics

Ages 7+

Our guides share how nomads read the wind direction from dune shapes, how they navigate by stars, how desert plants collect water. Practical knowledge, told through stories around a fire, more effective than any classroom.

Sunrise on the dune crest

All ages

The quietest hour. Climb to the top before the camp wakes. Watch the desert colour change from silver to gold. The kind of shared moment that families remember for decades.

Practical family information

Everything parents ask before booking

Family tent arrangements

We can arrange adjacent tents for families, or configure tent pairs for parents + children. Each tent has a real bed; additional floor space is available for a portable cot for younger children. The tents are fully enclosed and secured.

The 4×4 transfer

The journey from M'Hamid to the camp is 50km on unpaved piste, 4×4 only, around 1.5 hours. It is part of the adventure for older children (6+). For younger children and infants, plan this leg in the cooler morning and bring snacks and water.

Food for children

We adapt our menu for children on request. Plain rice, pasta, eggs, fresh bread and fruit are always available alongside the Moroccan main menu. Please mention any allergies or dietary requirements when booking.

Safety at camp

The site is enclosed, remote (no vehicle traffic nearby), and staffed at all times. The camp fire is supervised. Desert wildlife is present but encounters at camp are very rare, shake out shoes left outside, and the team will brief you on arrival.

Sleeping in the desert

Tents are comfortable and private. In winter (November to February) nights reach 5 to 8 °C, bring or request extra blankets. In spring and autumn, nights are 10 to 16 °C: a light sleeping layer is sufficient. All bedding is provided.

What to bring for kids

Sturdy closed-toe shoes or sandals, sun hat with brim, SPF 50+ sunscreen, electrolyte sachets for hydration, a small headtorch each (red-light for stargazing), and one stuffed animal or comfort item for the youngest. Leave the rest.

"Our children (8 and 11) still talk about the camels and the stars. It has been eight months. They have done Disney, they have done the Alps, nothing compares to two nights in the Sahara for sheer, undiluted wonder."

Family trip questions

What parents ask before they book

What age is appropriate for a desert camp stay? +

Children from around 4 to 5 years old typically enjoy desert camp stays fully. Younger children can come; the main consideration is the 4×4 transfer (1.5h on unpaved piste) and heat management. Teenagers consistently rate the Sahara as the best part of any Morocco trip, it is genuinely, not performatively, extraordinary.

Is it safe for young children? +

Yes. The camp is private, staffed, and remote from any traffic. The tents are fully enclosed. The main safety habits are: sunscreen every two hours, regular hydration, and shaking out shoes left outside overnight. The team briefs all families on arrival.

What is the best time of year for families? +

March to May and October to November are ideal, daytime 22 to 30 °C, manageable evenings. Easter and October half-term fall within good windows. Avoid July and August: 40°C+ daytime makes outdoor activity limited for children.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions for children? +

Yes. Plain rice, pasta, eggs, fresh bread and fruit are always available. Moroccan cuisine is naturally child-friendly (mild, varied, generous portions). Please specify requirements at booking.

How long does the 4×4 journey take? +

About 1.5 hours from M'Hamid to camp (50km on piste). For children, plan this in the cooler part of the day (morning or late afternoon), bring snacks and water, and let them know it is part of the adventure, most children love it.

Do we need any desert experience? +

None. Everything at Umnya is guided and prepared in advance. No camping skills required, no special equipment needed (we provide all bedding, towels, meals, and activity gear). You arrive; it is already done.
