Two hours that reframe Morocco entirely
Most people see Morocco from a car window or a riad rooftop. The helicopter removes every barrier between you and the landscape — you cross it all in a single, unbroken arc from one world to another.
Lifting from Marrakech, the medina spreads out below — the vast pink city at the foot of the mountains. Within minutes you are over the Atlas, the ridges rising to 4,167 metres. In winter and spring, the peaks carry snow. The light changes. The air clears.
Beyond the mountains, the Draa Valley opens: hundreds of kilometres of date palms following the riverbed south, ancient kasbahs rising from the ochre earth. Then the vegetation thins. The colours shift — from terracotta to pale gold. And then the dunes begin.
Erg Chegaga from the air is one of the most arresting sights on earth. Forty thousand hectares of sculpted sand, wave after wave, entirely uninhabited. You descend toward the camp — a cluster of tents barely visible among the dunes. The rotors slow. You step out into silence.

40 min
High Atlas crossing
Snow-capped peaks at eye level. Passes, gorges, Berber villages clinging to the slopes. The highest mountains in North Africa.
1h 10min
Draa Valley
The longest valley in Morocco unspools below — date palms, kasbahs, the ancient caravan route to Timbuktu. The last green before the desert.
2h
Erg Chegaga arrival
The dunes appear, gold and vast. The camp comes into view. The helicopter sets down. Camp staff are waiting. Mint tea. The silence of 40,000 hectares.
Not a tour. An arrival.
Every helicopter in Morocco shows you something. This one takes you somewhere.
A destination, not a loop
City helicopter tours circle Marrakech and return. This flight crosses the entire country — Atlas, Draa Valley, deep desert — and ends at a private camp in the most remote dunes in Morocco. The journey is the point, but so is what awaits at the end.
Erg Chegaga, not Merzouga
Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is accessible by tarmac. Erg Chegaga is accessible only by 4x4 or helicopter. It is three times larger, receives a fraction of the visitors, and the camp sits entirely alone in 40,000 hectares — no hotels on the horizon, no tour buses. The helicopter landing makes the remoteness visceral.
Private, entirely
No shared flights. No strangers in the cabin. No predetermined schedule. The aircraft departs when you are ready. You choose the route emphasis — more time over the Atlas or lower over the Draa. The pilot communicates what you are seeing. This is private aviation at its most personal.
"The rotors stopped and we stood there — dunes in every direction, nothing else. The team walked out to meet us with mint tea. That moment of stepping from the helicopter into that silence is the thing I keep coming back to."

Frequently Asked Questions
Helicopter Morocco — what guests ask before booking
How long is the helicopter flight from Marrakech to Erg Chegaga? +
The flight from Marrakech takes approximately 2 hours depending on the route and wind conditions. From Ouarzazate, the flight takes around 1 hour. The journey covers the High Atlas mountain range, the Draa Valley oasis, and the transition into the open Sahara before reaching the dunes of Erg Chegaga.
What do you see during the helicopter flight to the Sahara? +
Departing Marrakech, you fly over the medina and the city spread at the foot of the mountains. The Atlas crossing offers views of peaks reaching 4,167m — some snow-capped in winter and spring. Descending into the pre-Saharan zone, the Draa Valley unfolds below: hundreds of kilometres of date palms and ancient kasbahs. Then the earth changes colour — from ochre to deep gold — as the first dunes appear. Erg Chegaga comes into view as 40,000 hectares of sculpted sand, entirely uninhabited. You land beside the camp.
How many passengers can the helicopter carry? +
Private helicopter charters typically accommodate 4 to 6 passengers depending on the aircraft. We work with operators offering both light helicopters (3–4 passengers) and larger executive helicopters (5–6 passengers). All charters are private — no shared flights.
Can the helicopter do a round trip back to Marrakech? +
Yes. A round-trip can be arranged: fly in, spend 1 or more nights at Umnya Desert Camp, and return by helicopter. Alternatively, many guests fly in and return by private road transfer through the Draa Valley — itself a spectacular journey. We arrange both options and build them into your full itinerary.
Why is Erg Chegaga better than Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) for a helicopter trip? +
Erg Chegaga is three times larger than Erg Chebbi and receives a fraction of the visitors. It is reached only by 4x4 or helicopter — there is no tarmac road to the dunes. The camp sits entirely alone in 40,000 hectares of desert: no hotels on the horizon, no tour buses, no other guests in sight. Arriving by helicopter makes the remoteness immediately apparent. You land in silence. That silence stays.
