Umnya Desert Camp is located 90 kilometres west of M’Hamid el Ghizlane, in the heart of Erg Chegaga. By road, the journey from Marrakech takes five to six hours through some of the most dramatic landscapes in Morocco. By helicopter, it takes 1 hour and 40 minutes.
For guests arriving by private jet into Marrakech Menara airport, the helicopter connection operates from Marrakech and arrives directly at the camp’s dedicated landing area. The final descent over the dunes, with the camp visible below in the empty erg, is an approach unlike most travel experiences.
Access by private jet
Marrakech Menara (IATA: RAK) is the primary gateway for private jet access to southern Morocco. The airport handles private aviation and is equipped with FBO facilities. From Menara, the helicopter transfer to Umnya takes 1h40 and operates on demand.
For those arriving from Europe, direct flights from Paris, London, Geneva, Zurich, Madrid, and most major European cities are standard. Flight times from Paris or London to Marrakech run to approximately three hours.
Charter operators frequently cited for Morocco arrivals include VistaJet, NetJets, Luxaviation, and Air Hamburg. We work with multiple helicopter partners and can coordinate the full ground-to-camp transfer chain: aircraft handling, helicopter connection, and luggage transfer to the camp.
Agadir Al Massira (AGA) is an alternative entry point used by some operators, particularly for flights from the Gulf and Africa. The road transfer from Agadir to Erg Chegaga is longer than from Marrakech; helicopter connection from Agadir is also available.
What full privatisation at Umnya means
When a group takes the camp in full privatisation, several things follow from that decision. There are no other guests. The schedule is entirely yours. Staff ratios are higher than in any hotel context. The kitchen prepares for your group specifically. Activities are planned around your preferences, not a general programme.
The camp accommodates up to 16 guests in ten tents: a combination of double tents and a family suite. The configuration can be adapted to the specific composition of the group.
For smaller groups — two to four guests — privatisation remains available. The experience at this scale is different: more intimate, more silent, closer to a private residence in the desert than to a lodge. The ratio of private landscape to human presence shifts dramatically.
The experience of arrival
The helicopter approach to Erg Chegaga provides something that a road journey, however beautiful, does not: the visual comprehension of the landscape at scale. From a road vehicle, the dunes appear one at a time. From the air, Erg Chegaga is visible as what it actually is — an ocean of sand 40 kilometres long, with the camp at its edge.
The transition from the helicopter cabin to the desert floor is immediate. The Saharan silence arrives within seconds of the rotors stopping.
For guests who prefer the road journey as part of the experience, the 4x4 convoy from Marrakech through the High Atlas mountains, the Draa Valley, and the pre-Saharan landscape is a full day of travel that functions as its own arrival experience. Many guests use the road for the outward journey and helicopter for the return, allowing them both experiences.
Personalised service standards
Umnya is not a hotel. It does not operate to hotel service standards in the sense of a large property with a front desk and a standard room. It operates to the service standards of a private property.
The team knows each guest’s name before arrival. Dietary requirements are understood and incorporated, not accommodated. The programme — sunrise walks, camel treks, astronomical sessions, cuisine — is calibrated to the group. If a guest wakes at 4am and wants to go to the dunes, there is someone to accompany them.
For guests arriving from private jet travel, this level of service is familiar in form if not in context. What Umnya adds is an environment in which that service is delivered against a backdrop that very few properties in the world can offer: absolute darkness, absolute silence, and a horizon that reaches to the curvature of the earth.
Logistics coordination
We handle the coordination of helicopter transfers, ground transportation, and camp logistics for all arriving guests. For groups requiring full itinerary management from Marrakech arrival to departure, we work with a small number of trusted luxury travel partners.
