M'Hamid El Ghizlane: The Complete Travel Guide

Travel Guide M'Hamid Sahara Morocco

At the end of the road, where the tarmac dissolves into sand and the phone signal finally gives up, you find M’Hamid El Ghizlane. This is not a place for those who crave comfort. It is a place for those who crave something real.

Where Exactly Is M’Hamid?

M’Hamid El Ghizlane sits at the far southern tip of the Drâa Valley, 96 kilometres south of Zagora and roughly 600 kilometres from Marrakech. It straddles the edge of two worlds: the fertile ribbon of the Drâa River and the infinite expanse of the Sahara. It is the last significant settlement before the Algerian border. After M’Hamid, there are only dunes.

Getting There

From Marrakech: Follow the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m) over the High Atlas, then southeast through Ouarzazate, Agdz, and Zagora. Allow 8 to 9 hours. We recommend breaking overnight in Ouarzazate.

From Zagora: 96 kilometres south on a good tarmac road. Budget 1.5 hours through palm oases and ancient ksour.

Private Transfer: Umnya Desert Camp arranges transfers from Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Ouarzazate and Zagora with English or French-speaking drivers who know every stop worth making.

What to Do

The Village: Wander the narrow streets at dawn. The Monday souk brings nomads and traders from across the region. Visit the ruins of the old ksar at sunset.

Drâa River Oasis: Morocco’s longest river flows through M’Hamid before disappearing into sand. The palm grove along its banks is one of the most peaceful places in the country.

Erg Chegaga: 45 kilometres southwest, the dunes rise to over 100 metres, among the tallest and most remote in Morocco. Unlike tourist-heavy Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, Chegaga sees a fraction of visitors. Umnya Desert Camp sits within these dunes, and we consider them one of the most pristine environments we have ever encountered.

Lake Iriki (seasonal): After heavy rains, a vast seasonal lake forms in the desert basin, attracting flamingos and migratory birds. Extraordinary when it appears.

Practical Notes

  • Cash: Bring enough from Zagora or Marrakech. ATMs are unreliable in M’Hamid.
  • Language: Arabic and Tashelheit Berber. French is widely understood. English less so outside tourism.
  • Best season: October to April. Summer exceeds 45°C.
  • Connectivity: 4G in the village. Beyond, satellite only, consider this a feature.

M’Hamid does not reveal itself immediately. It requires patience and the willingness to slow down. Give it a morning, and it might give you a memory that outlasts everything else from your Morocco trip.
