Season, climate, and when to go
The Erg Chegaga region of southern Morocco, where Umnya Desert Camp is located, has a desert climate with significant seasonal variation. The optimal windows for executive retreats are October through early December and late February through April. During these periods, daytime temperatures range from 18 to 28 degrees Celsius, evenings are cool and clear, and the combination of daylight hours and temperature makes extended outdoor activity comfortable.
January can be cold at night, with temperatures approaching 5 degrees Celsius after dark. The camp is equipped with heating, and January retreats can be excellent, but the temperature range should be communicated clearly to participants in advance. Late April through May is a transition period when heat begins to build; the experience is still good but requires earlier start times for any outdoor activity.
The camp is closed in July and August. It opens again in September and runs through to June. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius, and the physical environment during these months is challenging for participants who are not acclimatized.
For US-based groups, the sweet spots that align with typical business calendars are October (after summer travel season ends and before Q4 pressure peaks) and March (after Q1 reporting and before the spring travel rush). Both windows offer excellent conditions and relatively predictable international flight availability.
Getting there: the journey from your home city to the dunes
The international gateway for the Erg Chegaga region is Marrakech Menara Airport. From the US, the most direct routing is via Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, which has direct connections from New York JFK, Miami, and Washington Dulles on Royal Air Maroc. European hubs, including London Heathrow, Paris CDG, Madrid Barajas, and Amsterdam Schiphol, all have frequent direct service to Marrakech.
From Marrakech, groups travel south to the camp by one of two routes. The road transfer is approximately six hours by comfortable 4x4 vehicles, passing through the Draa Valley, Agdez, Zagora, and the desert landscapes south of M’Hamid el Ghizlane. This journey is scenic and constitutes a genuine decompression transition; many groups find it among the most memorable parts of the experience. For groups with time constraints or members with mobility limitations, a charter flight from Marrakech to Zagora airport reduces ground transfer time to approximately ninety minutes.
The camp team coordinates all ground logistics from Marrakech onward. Groups arriving at Marrakech airport are met by the camp’s local team and transported south in a convoy of 4x4 vehicles that are configured for comfort rather than adventure. No off-road driving experience is required of participants.
What the camp provides and what to communicate to participants
Umnya Desert Camp offers fully equipped luxury tents with proper beds, linens, and en-suite bathroom facilities. The tents are private and comfortable in all seasons within the recommended travel windows. Meals are prepared on-site, and the kitchen team can accommodate any combination of dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian, halal, gluten-free, and allergy-related needs. Advance notice of one to two weeks is sufficient for any dietary configuration.
Connectivity at the camp is intentionally minimal. This should be communicated to participants before departure, framed as a deliberate design feature of the retreat rather than a logistical limitation. Participants who have a genuine operational requirement for connectivity during the retreat can discuss arrangements with the camp team in advance; the standard practice is to establish a scheduled daily check-in window rather than maintaining open connectivity throughout the stay.
For participants who have never been to a desert environment, the most useful preparation information covers sun protection (the light intensity is significant even at comfortable temperatures), footwear (comfortable walking shoes rather than specialized equipment), and the experience of silence (genuinely something different from city quiet). A one-page pre-arrival note to participants from the organizing team, setting the tone and managing expectations, significantly improves the transition experience on arrival.
