The journey from Marrakech to Erg Chegaga is one of those experiences that many travelers underestimate. It is not a short hop. The distance is roughly 600 km, and depending on how you travel, the journey takes eight to twelve hours. But it is also one of the most visually remarkable road journeys in Morocco, passing through the High Atlas, the Draa Valley, and the transitional landscapes between the green south and the open desert.
Understanding your transport options clearly before you leave makes the difference between a journey that is part of the experience and one that is simply exhausting.
The Route: What You Will Pass Through
From Marrakech, the standard route to Erg Chegaga follows a clear path:
Marrakech to Ouarzazate (3 hours): The road climbs over the Tizi n’Tichka pass in the High Atlas, one of the most dramatic mountain roads in North Africa. The descent into the Draa Valley begins here.
Ouarzazate to Zagora (2.5 hours): The landscape transitions from mountain to desert steppe. The Draa River and its famous palm groves appear as you approach Zagora.
Zagora to M’Hamid (2 hours): The road narrows and the landscape empties. The last town before the desert is M’Hamid el Ghizlane, the departure point for Erg Chegaga.
M’Hamid to Erg Chegaga (45 minutes to 1 hour by 4x4): The road ends at M’Hamid. From here, the piste through open desert reaches the camp. This segment requires a 4x4 vehicle driven by someone who knows the terrain.
Option 1: Private 4x4 Transfer (Recommended)
A private 4x4 transfer with a driver from Marrakech to the camp is the most comfortable and reliable option. The total journey takes eight to nine hours with stops.
Advantages:
- Door-to-door service from your Marrakech accommodation to Erg Chegaga
- Flexible departure time
- Stops at your preference (the Tichka pass, Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate)
- Air conditioning
- The driver handles the final desert piste
- No transfers or connections to manage
Disadvantages:
- The most expensive option
Cost range: Approximately 200 to 350 euros depending on vehicle and provider. We can arrange this directly for our guests as part of the booking.
Option 2: Bus from Marrakech to Zagora, Then Shared Taxi to M’Hamid
Several bus companies, including CTM and Supratours, operate daily services between Marrakech and Zagora. The journey takes approximately five to six hours. From Zagora, shared taxis (grands taxis) cover the two-hour road to M’Hamid.
Advantages:
- Significantly less expensive than a private transfer
- Reliable and regular services
- A genuine local travel experience
Disadvantages:
- Requires coordination between bus and taxi connections
- Fixed departure schedules
- No air conditioning on some older buses
- Luggage management at transfer points
- Still requires a 4x4 from M’Hamid to the camp
Timing: Buses from Marrakech to Zagora typically depart in the morning and early afternoon. Arriving in Zagora in time to connect to a grand taxi for M’Hamid the same day requires an early departure from Marrakech.
Cost range: Bus ticket approximately 15 to 25 euros; shared taxi Zagora to M’Hamid approximately 10 to 15 euros per person. Transfer from M’Hamid to camp arranged separately.
Option 3: Rental Car to M’Hamid
Renting a standard car and driving to M’Hamid is a practical option for travelers who want independence and enjoy road trips. The driving itself is straightforward: the route is well-signposted and the roads are in good condition all the way to M’Hamid.
Advantages:
- Complete flexibility on timing and stops
- Ability to explore at your own pace
- Stops in Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate are easy
- Cost-effective for groups sharing a vehicle
Disadvantages:
- You cannot drive a standard rental car beyond M’Hamid
- The final segment to Erg Chegaga requires leaving your car in M’Hamid and taking a 4x4 transfer
- Driving the High Atlas pass requires confidence on mountain roads
Important note: Do not attempt to drive to Erg Chegaga in a standard rental vehicle. The piste is sand desert terrain. We organize 4x4 transfers from M’Hamid for all our guests who arrive by rental car. Park in M’Hamid and inform us of your arrival time.
Cost range: Car rental varies widely; expect 40 to 80 euros per day. Fuel for the round trip adds approximately 60 to 90 euros. 4x4 transfer from M’Hamid to camp charged separately.
Option 4: Organized Tour from Marrakech
Several tour operators offer multi-day circuits from Marrakech that include Erg Chegaga. These package journeys typically include transport, accommodation at intermediate stops, and a guide.
Advantages:
- Everything included and organized
- Good option for first-time visitors to Morocco who want structured itineraries
Disadvantages:
- Fixed itineraries with limited flexibility
- Group travel means less control over pace and stops
- Quality varies significantly between operators
If you choose this route, verify that the tour specifically includes Erg Chegaga and not just Merzouga or Erg Chebbi, which are different dune systems approximately 400 km east of M’Hamid.
Option 5: Helicopter Transfer (Luxury Option)
Private helicopter transfers from Marrakech to the desert region are available through specialized operators. This dramatically reduces journey time to under two hours and provides extraordinary aerial views of the Atlas Mountains and Saharan landscape.
For guests interested in this option, we recommend discussing it during the booking process. We can connect you with reliable operators.
Practical Tips for All Travelers
Depart Marrakech by 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning. Regardless of your transport method, an early start is essential. The High Atlas pass is best crossed in daylight, and arriving at the camp before dark makes the first desert experience more welcoming.
Plan a stop in Ait Benhaddou. This UNESCO-listed kasbah is approximately 30 km before Ouarzazate on the standard route and is one of the most striking stops in southern Morocco. Allow 45 minutes to one hour.
Carry cash. M’Hamid has limited banking facilities. Withdraw dirhams in Zagora or Ouarzazate before the final leg of the journey.
Keep water accessible during the drive. The route crosses some very dry terrain, particularly south of Zagora. Have water within reach at all times.
Inform the camp of your arrival time. We will have someone waiting to guide you on the piste from M’Hamid. The desert tracks are not obvious to first-time visitors, and arriving in daylight with a local guide is strongly recommended.

Our Recommendation
For most guests visiting Umnya Desert Camp for the first time, a private 4x4 transfer from Marrakech is the option that makes the journey itself part of the experience rather than a logistics challenge to survive. The eight to nine hours on the road, with the right vehicle and the right stops, is genuinely memorable.
For travelers on tighter budgets, the combination of bus to Zagora and shared taxi to M’Hamid works well, with a 4x4 pickup from M’Hamid arranged through us.
