The programme

Not a day trip. A full desert expedition.

Five days in Erg Chegaga with a Paris-Dakar coach. Your group drives progressively harder terrain each day, from basic vehicle control to advanced dune crossings on 40-degree faces. By the final morning, you are navigating terrain you would not have recognised on arrival.

The camp is privatized for your group for the entire stay. No other guests. No shared schedule. The dune field belongs to you.

5-day programme

Each day builds on the one before. The terrain gets harder. The group gets better.

Day 1

Arrival and briefing

4x4 convoy from M'Hamid into Erg Chegaga. Vehicle familiarisation and safety briefing at the dune base. First light driving on flat desert terrain. Open-fire welcome dinner at the camp.

Day 2

Fundamentals

Tyre pressure management, throttle control, weight transfer. Driving across soft bowl sections and low dune ramps. Recovery practice: what to do when the vehicle stops moving. Evening debrief.

Day 3

Crest work and descent lines

Reading dune crests before committing. Controlled descents on increasingly steep faces. The coach calls the lines from the passenger seat. You drive. This is where instinct begins to form.

Day 4

Navigation and remote terrain

GPS versus terrain instinct. A full-day traverse across multiple dune systems with navigation exercise. Lunch in the desert, away from the camp. The dune field as a system, not a series of obstacles.

Day 5

Final crossing and departure

The group selects the hardest line available and drives it. Final debrief with the coach. 4x4 convoy back to M'Hamid at the pace the group has earned.

Your coach

A veteran of 15 consecutive Paris-Dakar editions

Your coach has driven and co-driven across the Sahara, the Empty Quarter, and the Atacama. He has finished on the podium. He has also broken down at night in the Mauritanian desert with no radio contact. He knows both sides.

He does not teach theory. He sits beside you, calls the line, and hands the wheel back to you. Over five days, he calibrates the programme to the group's progress. No two expeditions are identical.

What the group learns

Six disciplines, five days, one dune field

Dune reading

How to identify passable crests, soft bowls and descent lines before committing. What looks drivable from a distance often is not. Your coach shows you how to read the sand before the vehicle reaches it.

Momentum control

Throttle management, weight transfer, when to carry speed and when to stop it. The dune rewards commitment at the right moment and punishes hesitation at the wrong one.

Recovery techniques

Tyre deflation, traction boards, self-recovery on steep faces. What to do when the vehicle stops moving, and how to avoid reaching that point in the first place.

Descent lines

Controlled descents on 40-degree faces without losing the vehicle. The line chosen at the crest determines everything that happens in the next eight seconds.

Desert navigation

GPS versus terrain instinct. How rally navigators read the land. Understanding the dune field as a system, not as a series of individual obstacles to be crossed one by one.

Off-camber driving

Traversing side-slopes without rolling. The technique that separates desert drivers from everyone else, and the one most beginners get wrong in the first hours.

When to come

October through April

The dunes are at their most dramatic after the autumn winds reshape the crests. Avoid July and August: heat at midday stops driving entirely.

October, November and March are the optimal months: cool mornings, sharp light, firm sand. The dune faces hold their shape and the air is clear enough to read terrain from distance.

Post-wind crests, cool starts

November

Peak conditions

March

Sharp light, firm sand

Who books this programme

Groups with a common interest and the time to do it properly

Corporate groups

Leadership teams looking for a shared challenge that is impossible to replicate in a meeting room. Five days driving the Sahara creates a different kind of team than five days in a conference hotel.

4x4 clubs and off-road communities

Groups who already drive together and want to take their skills into a terrain that demands everything they know. Erg Chegaga is unlike any track or green lane in Europe.

Adventure travel groups

Friends or organized travel groups seeking a structured desert expedition with professional coaching and full logistics handled. No prior off-road experience required.

Incentive and event groups

Agencies and event organizers building a premium outdoor experience for high-value clients. The programme runs on a defined schedule, can be photographed and filmed, and delivers a measurable shared achievement.

Questions

What groups ask before booking

What is the minimum group size? +

The programme requires a minimum of 8 participants. This is a full camp privatization: your group is the only presence in Erg Chegaga for the entire stay. We do not run the programme for smaller groups.

What is the minimum duration? +

5 days in the desert. This allows enough time to progress through the full curriculum: vehicle control, dune reading, recovery, navigation and advanced terrain. Shorter stays do not deliver the level of progression the programme is designed for.

Do participants need off-road experience? +

No. A valid driving licence is required. The coach assesses each participant on day one and adjusts the programme. By day three, complete beginners are driving terrain they could not have attempted on arrival.

What is included? +

Full camp privatization, private Berber suite tents, all meals, daily coached driving sessions, all vehicles and equipment, 4x4 convoy transfers from M'Hamid, and the full camp team for the duration.

Can children participate? +

Children aged 14 and over can participate as passengers. Driving is reserved for adults with a valid licence.
